Your Navy TODAY (Feb. 29, 2012)

On any given day, in your Navy, our team of more than 600,000 professional Sailors and Civilians are working together around the globe to perform our mission: deter aggression and, if deterrence fails, win our Nation’s wars. It is not possible to share every aspect of this global team but, through this blog, we offer you a glimpse of what these men and women do.

Sailors assigned to the visit, board, search and seizure team practice vessel boarding techniques aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97). Halsey is the flagship for Combined Task Force 151, a multinational, mission-based task force working under Combined Maritime Forces, to conduct counter-piracy operations on Southern Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Somali Basin, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) transits San Diego Bay en route to homeport in Bremerton, Wash., following a seven-month deployment.

Sailors from Naval Air Facility Atsugi recite the oath of enlistment during a re-enlistment ceremony on Mount Suribachi. Iwo To, formally known as Iwo Jima, was the site of a major World War II battle with more than 26,000 American casualties and nearly 22,000 Japanese fatalities. The monument marks the spot where the iconic photograph of the Marines raising the flag was taken on Mount Suribachi.

Explosive ordnance disposal technicians assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 3 rappel from an SH-60F Sea Hawk helicopter assigned to the Red Lions of Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron (HS) 15 to the Military Sealift Command fast combat support ship USNS Bridge (T-AOE 10) during a heliborne visit, board, search and seizure training event. Carl Vinson and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
