Ten years ago today the destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) was attacked by terrorists while at anchor in Aden, Yemen — 17 Sailors were killed in the attack. Today we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the bombing of USS Cole, the extraordinary effort of her crew in saving the ship, and our shipmates lost that day. The former commanding officer of USS Cole, CDR Kirk Lippold, USN (ret.) has a blog post on the USNI Blog commemorating this anniversary.
There is also a commemorative video on the Navy’s website which you can see here.
By the way, Gloria Merces Virtutis is the motto of USS Cole and means “Glory is the Reward of Valor” – an apt motto for the ship and her Sailors.
